Made with Human Intelligence: The Human Touch in an Increasingly Automated World

With automation and AI weaving its way into our daily lives, the term "human intelligence" carries a depth that goes beyond productivity, processing power and efficiency. It's about nuance, empathy, and the irreplaceable value of human touch - qualities that machines, no matter how advanced, cannot truly replicate. As a graphic recorder, I witness this every day, sketching in real-time while listening to conversations that shape ideas, solve problems, and spark innovation.

Graphic inspired by Beth Spence and the Introvert Drawing Club.

When I draw during meetings, I am not just documenting words; I am capturing the energy in the room. I see the pauses, the raised eyebrows, the subtle shifts in tone. My pen moves with the rhythm of human expression, capturing what is said and the spaces in-between. This is not a task that AI can perform. AI can analyse speech and text, but it can't sense the weight behind a pause or the excitement in someone’s voice. It doesn’t know when to exaggerate a sketch of an idea to emphasise its importance or when to quietly highlight a moment of connection between participants.

Every illustration I create is a testament to human emotion - crafted with intuition, perspective, and subtle active listening. This process isn't just about recording; it's about reflecting the shared human experience in a way that validates and amplifies it.

As the world increasingly relies on automation, the human touch in our work becomes even more essential. It’s a reminder that our intelligence isn’t just about processing information; it’s about understanding the grit of achievement - the kind that comes through struggle, setbacks, and navigating nuance. It’s about connecting, feeling deeply, and creating meaning in ways that machines never can.

This is an experience I hope my 5-year-old son will have - knowing the joy and pride that comes from pushing through challenges and embracing the uniquely human journey of growth.
